Natural Crackle Paint Finish by RMP Finishes is a collagen-based crackle medium that produces a stunning, weathered look without synthetic additives. It dries clear with a satin sheen and can be applied with a brush or roller between layers of Real Milk Paint® to create your desired effect.

Unlike chalk-based crackle paints that can fail or flake unpredictably, Natural Crackle delivers consistent, controllable results — from subtle, aged texture to deep, dramatic fractures that reveal your chosen base color underneath.

1. Preparation

  • Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free of dust or wax.

  • Apply a base coat of your chosen Real Milk Paint® color. Let it dry completely.

  • Test on a small section before the full application to preview the crack size.

2. Application Methods

For Fine Cracks

  • Thin Natural Crackle with a small amount of water (up to 20%).

  • Brush or roll evenly over the base coat.

  • Let dry fully, then apply your top coat of Real Milk Paint®.

  • Seal with Finishing Cream, Furniture Wax, or Pure Tung Oil for lasting protection.

For Large “Alligator” Cracks

  • Apply one or two thick coats of Natural Crackle directly over the base color.

  • Allow each coat to dry completely.

  • Apply your top coat of Real Milk Paint® while the surface is dry to the touch.

  • Once cracks form, seal with Furniture Wax, Pure Tung Oil, Dark Raw Tung Oil, or varnish.

Pro Tip: Avoid heavy water-based sealers; they may soften or blur the crackle effect.

3. Curing and Sealing

Let the finish dry fully before sealing. For best results, use oil-based or low-water topcoats like:

  • Furniture Wax

  • Pure Tung Oil

  • Dark Tung Oil

  • Finishing Creams Allow the sealed surface to cure for 24–48 hours before use.

4. Cleanup and Storage

  • Clean brushes and tools with warm water immediately after use.

  • Store sealed tightly in a cool, dry place.

  • Shelf life: 1–2 years without refrigeration.

  • Non-flammable and odorless once cured.

NOTE: Natural Crackle is not recommended to be used with paints other than Real Milk Paint®. Please test Natural Crackle with your paint before proceeding to the full project.

Is Natural Crackle safe to use indoors?

Yes. It’s made from natural, biodegradable gelatin and water with less than 1% phenol. It’s non-toxic, non-flammable, and virtually odorless once dry, perfectly safe for indoor use and around children or pets when used as directed.

How do I control the size of the cracks?

Crack size depends on product thickness and dilution:

  • Use undiluted for large “alligator” cracks.

  • Thin up to 20% with water for finer hairline effects.

  • Apply evenly and avoid over-brushing to maintain clean crack patterns.

Can I apply Natural Crackle directly over finished or sealed wood?

No. Crackle mediums need an absorbent surface to bond properly. Remove sealers, waxes, or oils first using mild sanding or one of our natural Solvents.

Do I need to seal the crackle finish?

Yes. Once your desired crackle pattern forms and dries, seal it with an oil-based or low-water topcoat. Excellent options include Pure Tung Oil, Dark Tung Oil, Finishing Cream, or Furniture Wax. Avoid heavy waterborne polyurethanes, which may soften the cracks.

Can I use Natural Crackle as an adhesive?

Absolutely. The collagen-based formula doubles as a natural glue for light bonding applications such as wood, paper, cardboard, or leather.
